Tour Highlights
Naritasan Shinshoji Temple
With a history of over a thousand years, Naritasan Shinshoji Temple is a renowned temple loved not only by Buddhists but also by tourists. Ever since Naritasan Shinshoji Temple was founded, the “Goma Fire Prayer Ritual” has been performed every day without interruption. In this ritual, people pray to the principal deity, Fudo Myo-o (known as “O-Fudo-sama”), who is revered as the god of fire, asking for the fulfillment of the worshipers’ wishes and protection from misfortune. Furthermore, at Naritasan Park, which is adjacent to the temple, you can enjoy the natural scenery created by beautiful walking paths, numerous ponds, and waterfalls. There is also a magnificent Peace Pagoda within the grounds, which catches the eye of visitors.
Omotesando Street
Along Naritasan Omotesando Street, the main approach leading to Naritasan Shinshoji Temple, you will find a row of traditional shops where you can taste homemade rice crackers, enjoy sake tastings, and explore traditional crafts. During the Edo period, this road was the final kilometer of a long pilgrimage route leading from the capital, and weary pilgrims would stay at inns here and recharge their energy at local eateries. Among them, grilled eel over rice (unagi) was considered particularly nutritious. Having become popular among visitors to Narita, it eventually became a local specialty. Today, there are many eel restaurants lining Omotesando Street, and at some of them, you can watch skilled chefs fillet and grill fresh eel right in front of you.
